Portrait de André Dhôtel

André Dhôtel

André Dhôtel is our Dickens. The beauty of his novels comes first of all from their spontaneous abundance, their naive generosity. Like Arab storytellers, Dhôtel spreads out his little carpet, and then begins to tell and tell endlessly; Adventures come to mind so quickly that no one would think that he could have made a plan or ever calculated his style and his sentences. These are the adventures of naked life.
And we hang on his words. These are completely banal adventures that happen to our neighbors as well as to us: to the postman on our street, to the shoemaker, to the errand boy – although they perhaps have a preference for the unfortunate, for the worried and for the wicked.
Yet the greatness of André Dhôtel lies elsewhere. I think he is never satisfied with misfortune and wickedness. Through misfortune, wickedness, the apparent mediocrity of existence, he pursues some unknown truth in which we would all be reconciled. He pursues it and I had the impression more than a hundred times that he had found it and was giving it to us in the same wonder that comes to us from a sudden ray, a smile, a dawn.
It looks like a construction site open to the rising sun, with its stones still glistening with dew.

Jean Paulhan, 1955
