Luce, the Neglected Child

Jean Paulhan

The low lands are covered with mist; a larger figure rises and goes its way without leaving the ground, it is a cloud. Yesterday, a kid cried in the street to Marie-Jeanne: "I know, go, that you have slept with soldiers!" The two sisters confess therefore Aytré and Carois: there they are, seated on the terrace, who look at the country, the fog. The doctor who turned around Yvonne sees them from his garden, compares himself to Carois, Luce can approach them.
"If she chatters, later? asks Aytré. — I would like that she say a word to her father; and after what he has done, I no longer look at him as my husband." Marie-Jeanne adds some words, comes to squeeze Aytré's hands who does not hear them, and cries lightly.
Luce seats her doll on the armchair, and says: "Now, Bleuette looks at you"
— "Do you go to school, Luce?"
— "As mom says: provided that I know how to bring myself back, that will suffice me."
Here the little Paul, who slept with reserve, wakes up and stirs in his carriage. How many children.

Yvonne: "Oh me, I am not cousin of the rainbow.
Carois. — But how many friends do you have, great friends?
— Marie-Jeanne is the best, we may be sisters. I have another who lives in America: it is she who wants to make me enter the theater.
— And of friends, it is me that you prefer, is it not?"
Yvonne gets angry: "What do you mean? Do you think I have thirty-six?" Then: "Know well that I have not given myself to anyone before you. Do not doubt it!"
Why does she speak book? Carois is embarrassed, Luce comes to look at Yvonne angry.
By force of stirring, Paulot tumbles from his carriage. Marie-Jeanne finishes with a blow her tears, runs to pick him up, makes him turn in the air and kisses him.
Aytré believed his head broken, it is that he does not know children. Paul, who has not had harm, goes to sleep again.

While Carois says to himself: "I must speak to her sincerely, the future of our love..." and so on, the fall of Paul recalls to Yvonne that Luce can get bored. She flees behind a tree, her dresses fly; but Luce, little short, stays in her place. When Yvonne unmasks herself with great laughs, Luce smiles. Yvonne has enough, she comes back. As Aytré takes Marie-Jeanne: "They are going to make zoom-zoom again, they do not wait for the night." She is no longer angry. "I am going to write you all that I think, all. Wait for me a little". She goes away. How I would like to answer people: I am going to write you. Here Luce who brings a stone, half of her. Carois thinks see that she wedges the wheel of the carriage. Not at all. The stone is simply at the place where carried earlier the head of the little one.
Carois distracted looks at the staircase by which the mist rises. Luce goes to the door and calls low: "Paulot! Paulot!"
