After announcing its desire to negotiate a withdrawal of Soviet forces, the Politburo changed its mind and decided to crush the revolution. More than 2,500 Hungarians were killed, 200,000 fled to Austria and from there to the West. The arrests continued for several months. In January 1957, the new pro-Soviet government suppressed all public opposition.
