Contrary to the image of cruelty we have of him, Paulhan offers us here a story marked by modesty, touching in its sincerity, luminous in his pain, where friendship and tenderness emerge: “It was during the day that followed, around two o'clock in the afternoon, that he suddenly stopped moaning, opened his mouth as if to smile and passed into this smile.”
