What does the art of a Fautrier, a Bazaine, a Staël or a Pollock consist of, in short, informal art? Jean Paulhan attempts to show, in this brief essay, what dangers he escapes and all modern painting with him: “Everything happens as if artists these days had, above all other concerns, the concern of making philosophers lie. Lessing no sooner called painting “figurative art” than it began to no longer represent anything at all. Taine wants to reduce the work of art to the society in which it is displayed, and our bourgeois society immediately begins to secrete images that one would say came, at the dawn of civilization, from the whim of a black child. Fouillee, Guyau, see art as a game. But if there is a trait of modern art, it is that it resembles some attempt at holiness, in which the entire soul (said Kandinsky) is involved: in short, the opposite of a game.”
