“Fautrier knew how to maintain in a painting which neglects detail, eloquence, truth and suggests more than it means – in painting modern - all the prestige and the rich material, in short all the resources of the great painting of the past: this required more than one discovery. This undoubtedly required fury and rage.
But why, one might say, is it precisely these days... Ah, that's another one question. But we can, failing to resolve it, turn it around: and why not Wouldn't it be these days? Why would modern man not have pushed into this meaning a little further than the men of all time? Why our time Would it not be one of those heroic eras, which the future eras?
