Marie Laurencin
Marie was hardly made for a time when paintings became reflections, and views, rather than visions. It was given to us all the same. Like pure grace.
Everyone knows that the ordinarily sensual look cold, the cruel look tender, and the intelligent look stupid. Thus men only show their neighbors the features they wanted to get rid of, already very close to detaching themselves from them.
Too bad for those who let themselves be deceived. What wise Mary shows you here is not men. But rather their guardian angels.
Jean Paulhan, 1949.
