Invited to a stay in Switzerland immediately after the Liberation, Jean Paulhan recounts his travel memories. We will understand the initial dazzlement caused by abundance: “Switzerland gave us the feeling of a reserve (for food and necessities, in place of chamois and reindeer) or better of a witness country: witness to who knows what civilization or what golden age, which we French had indeed lost through our fault, it may be forever, which knows?» The memories and descriptions follow one another, in the cheerful, sometimes impertinent tone of a great lord who remembers the Latin Quarter, hiding here or there a paradox carefully coated in humor.
