“1936-1945: the airlock of the century. Spanish War, Popular Front, fascist threat, Second World War, Resistance, collaboration, Liberation, purge. With the dangers materializing day by day, it was interesting to observe how two men, united by a very solid and complex friendship, will behave in this beating of all values, of all their values. These approximately three hundred letters illuminate the interior of the airlock, sometimes with a harsh light, more often in a sort of chiaroscuro imposed successively by the precipitation of events, the screed of the Occupation and the close game with the C.N.É. Another interest of this correspondence: the almost daily life of the reference magazine of the 1930s, La Nouvelle Revue Française. We no longer count the letters where we discuss summary, where we measure the contribution of new writers (Sartre or Gary), where we practice Malraux, Gide, Chardonne, Mauriac, etc. This cross-reading also allows us to witness the development of works as essential as Les Fleurs de Tarbes and Terre Natale. The exchange between the two men is so open that the differences of taste - real - are expressed as freely as their agreements. Finally, we will closely follow the private chronicle of families and loved ones. Of the places from which they are written, the letters offer multiple sketches from life, acerbic or emotional. Conciseness, firmness, humor, we are undoubtedly dealing with two masters of the fragment.” Jean-Jacques Didier.

The Hyper Paulhan site is now public and accessible to everyone on the EMAN platform!

Conducted since 2013, first as part of the Labex OBVIL (Observatory of Literary Life) then on the EMAN platform, managed by the Thalim laboratory (cnrs – sorbonne nouvelle – ens), in partnership with the IMEC (Institut Mémoire de l'édition contemporain), the SLJP (Society of Readers of Jean Paulhan), the HyperPaulhan project makes available to everyone on the Internet a set of letters received and written by Jean Paulhan, both in the form of scanned documents and transcriptions. Two periods are concerned: 1925-1936 and 1950-1958, which correspond to Jean Paulhan's intense activity at the NRF.
