Terror and rhetoric: Giraudoux, Sartre, Blanchot (Tokyo)

Maurice Blanchot   Jean Paulhan

Fabula, Gilles Philippe, 21 septembre 2023

From October 14, 2023 to October 15, 2023
At Maison franco-japonaise, Tokyo

Almost 80 years ago, Jean Giraudoux died suddenly, a playwright and novelist then at the height of his fame. In the years preceding his death, Sartre and Blanchot, still young authors, devoted significant articles to his work - in Situations, I and in Faux Pas - where the question of language and trust in it was raised. In the background, one could sense Paulhan's questions expressed at the same period in Les Fleurs de Tarbes.

This conference will be an opportunity to ask what place Giraudoux's work occupies in these reflections, and to explore the questionings that led Sartre and Blanchot, in dialogue with his work and also with Paulhan's, to define their own position toward language.

Speakers: Yukie MASE (Miyagigakuin Univ.), Noriko NAKAMURA (Konan Univ.), Seigo TANOKUCHI (International Christian University), Vincent BRANCOURT (Keio Univ.), Andre JOB (emeritus upper-level chair professor), Nao SAWADA (Rikkyo Univ.), Gilles PHILIPPE (Univ. of Lausanne), Io WATANABE (Keio Univ.), Takashi ICHIKAWA (Keio Univ.), Kai GOHARA (Univ. of Tokyo), Kazuya TSUKIYAMA (Keio Univ.), Christophe BIDENT (Univ. of Picardie)
