Musée Delacroix, 18 décembre 2018

On the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of Jean Paulhan's death, the Delacroix Museum joins forces with the Maison des Ecrivains et de la Litterature (MEL), the Societe des Lecteurs de Jean Paulhan (SLJP), and the Institut Memoires de l'Edition Contemporaine (IMEC) to offer an evening in tribute to this great French writer and critic.

What intellectual role did Jean Paulhan play? How did his contemporaries judge his work at the time of his death, on October 9, 1968? Fifty years later, at a time when two volumes of his critical writings are being published, does he embody the myth of the critic, and of the ("perfect critic")?

During this evening, we invite you to watch Jerome Prieur's documentary, Jean Paulhan ou Le Don d'ubiquite, and to listen to the recollections of Jean-Claude Zylberstein, who knew Jean Paulhan well at the end of his life. Then Patrick Kechichian, Bernard Baillaud, and Muriel Pic will each develop their own view of Jean Paulhan as a shy yet intimidating man, seeking the sacred through modern art, and the forms of animality among his contemporaries (including himself). Two young scholars, Clarisse Barthelemy and Camille Koskas, who have just defended their dissertations on Jean Paulhan, will speak about their work and research in his archives, preserved at IMEC, and about the "Labex Hyper-Paulhan," for which they are the lead coordinators. Finally, we will hear Jean Paulhan's voice (and wit), thanks to the broadcast of an excerpt from his "Entretiens avec Robert Mallet" recordings (1952-1953).
